Program objectives
The Master in Regional and Urban Strategies trains graduates to take up strategic and operational responsibilities in the field of urban and regional development. Management of urban public action requires a capacity for overall project coordination with the ability to formulate and steer public policies and projects, bringing into play different levels of organization (regions, cross-border regions, metropolitan areas, intercommunal structures, towns and neighbourhoods) and taking into account the rationales of the different public and private stakeholders involved in these policies (elected officials, administrations, public services, private companies, financial institutions, non-profit organizations and interested residents) and the tools and methods they use (finance and management, quantitative methods, architecture, etc.).
Main orientations and specific features
The two years of the study program alternate training in professional skills and theoretical concepts:
- professional training is provided in the first year through a project commissioned by a local authority or private or public company (one and a half day per week) and, in the second year, by a personalized program of professional workshops and a long internship;
- theoretical training focuses on public policies, urban sociology, urban and regional economics and urban planning law – in liaison with Sciences Po’s research program “cities are back in town”;
- in-depth methodological work focusing on statistics, management tools, mapping, quantitative and qualitative surveys, documentary research, oral debates on controversial subjects, field trips and study trips.
This program relies on the support and intellectual, educational and professional guidance of a highly motivated faculty (researchers and practitioners) and mentors embedded in local, national and international networks. Although this Master focuses primarily on France and Europe, it also integrates a wider international focus.

Career opportunities
Graduates are qualified for positions in a variety of organizations: local authorities, R&D departments and consulting firms working in France and internationally, development organizations, banks, property development companies, urban and development agencies, international organizations and research centers. The fields cover public policies, economic development, corporate regional strategies, urban organization and development and social action or sustainable development policies. Graduates may obtain operational positions, specialize in studies and expert appraisal or plan a career in research, since the master allows students to pursue dissertation work. Graduates are also equipped to sit civil service examinations after obtaining the master.
