University of St Gallen

double diplome saint gallMastering several languages and being familiar with different European cultures – these are but two essential competences required in a world in which the national dimension is losing importance, giving way to international perspectives. On the job market, experts are looked for who offer the following qualities: they need a pluridisciplinary education that allows them to better grasp the contemporary global stakes, and they should be able to work in an international environment.

In this context presenting a dual degree from two top European institutions is major advantage. This is why Sciences Po and the University of St. Gallen (HSG), both members of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), have create a dual degree programme which allows students to obtain, after two years of study, the University of St. Gallen's Master of International Affairs and Governance and the Sciences Po Master's degree (at Sciences Po, different programmes can be chosen: International Affairs (several specialisations available), Public Administration, European Affairs, International Business).

double diplome saint gallThe programme intends to a high-level education preparing the students and future decision-makers for international-focused jobs, both in the private and public sectors. These job profiles require excellent general knowledge and specific knowledge in the political, economic and social realms. The year spent in St. Gallen completes the study of international affairs and governance with solid competences in finance, management and international business.

Goals and Opportunities

The dual degree between Sciences Po and St. Gallen is structured around for major goals:

A large perception of politics, economics and society

The programme intends to encourage students to adopt a global approach of the topics studied, which allows them to analyze political, economic and legal questions in an international framework.

A synthetical and critical spirit

The ability to make sound and responsible decisions is an essential competence, which allows students to acquire and mobilise new knowledge and to advisedly use theoretical methods after adapting them to each question or problem set. Writing a master's thesis at St. Gallen allows dual degree students to get acquainted with academic discussions and scientific research tools, which are paramount to becoming actors aware of the imperatives of a globalized society.

Analytical capabilities and autonomous learning

Life-long learning is an essential concept in today's world; students are therefore encouraged to deepend their theoretical knowledge and to be conscious of the limits and usefulness of their work.

Team spirit and organisation

Teamwork in the framework of projects and workshops offers the opportunity to shed light on everyone's leadership and management qualities, which are key competences.

Dual degree graduates today work in financial institutions, consulting firms and big multinational corporations. They are also present in national and regional administrations and in international organisations. NGOs, diplomacy, the media as well as the academic realm are also among the multiple workplaces of dual degree alumni.

The curriculum

Structure

The dual master's programme between Sciences Po and the University of St. Gallen features a two-year curriculum: the first year takes place at the Paris campus of Sciences Po, the second year, at the University of St. Gallen. At each institution, the students are integrated into the regular master's programmes:

The dual degree's guiding principle is the full mutual recognition of classes and exams taken at the respective partner institution. The programme thereby allows students to study similar content under different perspectives and with different methods.

Study programme in the two institutions

First Master's year in Paris

During their first year in Paris, students are enrolled in one of Sciences Po's master's programmes. They can choose between four different master's programmes (International Affairs, European Affairs, Public Affairs, Finance et Stratégie). The language of instruction is English, but students can also choose classes in French.

There is a specific French-Swiss joint seminar under the supervision of professors of Sciences Po and the University of St. Gallen, which focuses on methodology. It enhances contacts among students and also endeavours to encourage intercultural competences.

The dual degree is innovative as it offers students an equilibrium between fundamental intellectual units and specialisation classes, completed by the practically-oriented approach of many teachers. Academic excellence is further enhanced by a stimulating intellectual environment in the French capital.

Second Master's year in St. Gallen

During their second year at St. Gallen, students are enrolled in the Master's programme in International Affairs and Governance.

They thereby complete their Sciences Po education with the University of St. Gallen's expertise in economics, management and business. Dual degree students are not obliged to sit the "Grand Oral" exam at Sciences Po but replace it by a master's thesis in St. Gallen. The languages of instruction in St. Gallen are English and/or German.
